All around us our family breathes, grows, & passes into oblivion. Our greatest joy & peace come at moments we feel inseparable from hopping kinglets, ripening berries, clouds moving over the ocean.
One day I met a sea lion lumbering out of the water near a dead sea lion washed up on the beach. I felt her sadness, like my own suffering in separation & loss. Another time I watched surf scoters floating tiny among the big waves. Feeling their ease in the ocean's vastness deepened the sense of ease I feel in acceptance & love.
One of the greatest expressions of mystery is love. The complexities, conflicts, joys, revelations, enduring loyalties - there is a resonance between couple love & environmental patterns. From garden spiders to California poppies, sex is the dance of the universe unfolding. The healing we create in relationship ripples out across the biosphere.
Another great mystery is death. Every being around us unfolds into life & faces its own death - jay, oak, old man down the street. In our times small deaths are amplified in species extinctions. Canoeing our local Laguna de Santa Rosa, I enjoyed the beautiful presence of egrets. I also felt the painful absence of once-plentiful elk.
All our mysteries are dependent on the mystery of mycelium within the soil, phytoplankton in the oceans, light & heat falling from the closest star. The process of painting is an exploration of mystery. The resulting image is how I share with you the belonging I find.
