During the summer of 2010, I was working hard on the Pomo Project, a celebration of local indigenous culture created by a group of artists & activists under the tutelage of Armando Williams, a Pomo dancer, massage therapist, & healer. But the urgent pull of the disastrous spill in the Gulf of Mexico kept me awake at night.

I began a five canvas prayer for all the beings of the Gulf. Each of the five paintings has a prayer written across the canvas & an animal painted semi-transparently over the writing. I began with the pompano, then the triggerfish, the blue crab, & the pelican. I always considered the turtle to be the key, & saved it for last. The afternoon I finished it, the well was capped.
